experimental artists cinema & theory and works by cathy fitzgerald. Thesis working title – 'The ecocidal eye: beyond the anthropocentric gaze to a relational gaze in cinema'

key experimental ecocinema books/texts

‘Most academic film studies professionals don’t take nature film seriously, either historically or theoretically. Indeed, there are few better indications of the educationally counterproductive gap between the humanities and the sciences’, Scott Macdonald, Adventures of Perception (2009) p. 156.

There is a very comprehensive book/ article list and filmography at ecomediastudies.org that covers the relatively small field of theoretical enquiry of nature in mainstream film, documentary etc.    http://www.ecomediastudies.org/resources/bibliography/ – film and general ecocriticism)

So far I have only come across a few ecocinema books, papers and seminars and books that examine in detail the intersection of experimental film-making and the natural world.

ecocriticism in film book 2010Recent noteworthy academic articles and books that reference experimental film/media and nature are:

Scott MacDonald: Towards an ecocinema (from the Journal of Interdisciplinary Studes of Literature and Environment (ISLE) 2004, p. 107-32).

Scott MacDonald: Adventures of Perception (2009). In particular the chapter on Upclose and Political – three short ruminations on nature film.

Also see MacDonald’s earlier book ‘The Garden in the Machine (2001) – a survey of mostly US experimental filmmakers who concentrate on novel cinematic forms relating to place/landscape

Paula Willoquet-Maricondi: in particular the chapter Shifting Paradigms from Environmentalis films to Ecocinema: from Anthropocentrism to Eoccentrism Part 1 (2010) also, her previous paper  Through the Glass, clearly RelasePrint Journal, Nov/December, 2005.
